John 20:27-29 (NIV): 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” 28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
How Can I Strengthen My Faith When I Can’t See God?
Thomas, one of the twelve disciples, earlier states (John 20:25) that He will only believe in Jesus’ resurrection if he sees the nail marks in His hands, and can feel where He was speared on His side.
Here, Jesus does not condemn Thomas, but meets Him exactly where he is with the doubt and demand for physical proof. Jesus gently pushes Thomas toward faith by telling him to stop doubting, as God is not threatened by honest doubt, but He calls us to move through it toward trust.
Then Jesus turns from Thomas’ story to ours. He points out that the true path of the Christian faith is believing without seeing, and that we are more blessed. Jesus affirms and honors future believers (us) who will trust based on the testimony of others, Scripture, and the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Now Let's Pray
Dear Heavenly Father thank you for the daily reminder that we are blessed. Thank You for Scripture and the Holy Spirit, which fuel our faith to believe without seeing. Thank You for the love and grace you have for believers, even in seasons of doubt in your goodness and eternal love for us. We trust Your sovereign plan.
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
