The Parable of the Sower (Part 3)
- Psalm1one

Matthew 13:3-7, 22 (NIV): “‘3 A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed… 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants.’”
“22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful.”
Can You Worship Both Jesus and Comfort?
These thorns don’t kill the seed outright, they just compete with it in the garden. The plant initially grows, but it is chocked, crowded, and prevented from fulfilling its purpose. This resembles someone who hears the Word and participates in spiritual practices (church sermons, reading the Word, serving). Yet the thorns of life slowly creep in, such as greed, worry, and idols, which prevent this person from bearing the fruit they are capable of.
The thorny soil is a divided heart. It loves both Jesus and comfort. We must first identify our thorns and confess them to God (or others) in repentance. Next, just like in a garden, you have to weed regularly - consistently bring these thorns to light to take away their power. Lastly, treasure God’s Word above everything. Psalm 1 reminds us that the righteous person “delights in the Law of the Lord” and “whatever they do prospers”.
Now Let’s Pray
Dear Heavenly Father thank You reminding us that no matter how far we may be from You, we are always welcomed back without shame and judgement. Remind us to repent consistently to keep our hearts fleshy and pure. Bless us with the discipline to delight in Your Word, and meditate on it day in night, like a tree planted by streams of water.
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
