1 Samuel 16:7 NIV: "But the Lord said to Samuel, 'Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.'"
What Does God See When He Looks at Me?
After Saul’s reign, God rejected Saul as the king of Israel for his disobedience. Samuel is then sent to anoint the next king of Israel, who he assumes to be one of Jesse’s eldest son’s, Eliab. Eliab is strong, tall, and to the human eye has a favorable appearance. David, the youngest son of Jesse, was instead chosen by God to reign as king because his heart was humble, trusting, and devoted to God. God’s perspective is not bound to external factors, but is focused on internal qualities of faith, character, and devotion. God is after our hearts, and He will transform our heart posture when we lean into His love.
Now Let’s Pray
Dear Heavenly Father thank You for loving us for who we are. I pray that You continue to soften our hearts and transform our character as we look to Your word for guidance. Remind us through scripture that although honoring our temple is a gift, the true weight of our validation lies internally in our hearts and our identity in Christ. May You continue to impress on our hearts faith, humility, and acceptance of others. Fuel us with the strength to rebuke superficial, condemning thoughts from the enemy.
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
