Hebrews 5:12-14 (NIV): 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.”

What Is Spiritual Maturity?

We are invited to grow in both knowledge and application of God’s Word. As time goes on, Christians will progress from living on “milk” to “solid food”. Examples of milk include assurance of salvation, God’s grace and mercy, repentance and faith, and the basics of who Jesus is and what He did. Solid food could be discerning good from evil in moral situations, endurance through suffering by faith, understanding God’s sovereignty, and the high priesthood of Christ.

Although none of us will ever be perfect, reading and applying Scripture helps believers grow stronger in their faith, make wise choices, and learn how to help and lead others.

Now Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father thank You for calling us to spiritual maturity. Thank You for the Word of God which is alive and active, and allows us to communicate with You. As we grow as christians, give us the strength and discipline to understand and practice the solid food of Your teachings, so that we can lead others.

In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
