Hebrews 12:9–11 (NIV): “9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”

How Is God Like a Father?

Human parents discipline us for a short time, and sometimes imperfectly. As we grow and mature, we realize that all of the rules, “no’s”, and strict practices from our parents were, more often than not, acts of love and protection. But God’s discipline is always for our good, with a specific goal: that we would “share in His holiness”. This means becoming set apart, refined, and more like Christ - living with clean motives, a soft heart, and spiritual maturity.

Discipline isn’t fun. It's often painful, confusing, or frustrating. But the fruit comes later, a “harvest of righteousness and peace”. You will reap the benefit of God’s loving discipline if you lean into it, not resist it. God promises growth, healing, and peace if you remain faithful.

Now Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father thank You for never leaving our side, and protecting us even when we don’t understand Your methods. I pray we can find joy in our trials, even when it’s hard, knowing that You are always working behind the scenes. Continue to refine our faith and encourage us into spiritual maturity, so that we may share in Your holiness.

In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
