Deuteronomy 8:3 (NIV): “He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna... to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”

Are We Fully Dependent on God?

So what was Manna? Manna was the daily provision from God, provided to the Israelites every day (except on the Sabbath) for the 40 years they wandered in the wilderness after leaving Egypt. Manna was not just physical food, it was a consistent provision that taught trust, obedience, and dependence on God. It appeared on the ground like flakes every morning, God spoke it into existence. It would spoil if hoarded overnight, which encouraged daily trust and dependence on God to always provide what is sufficient to sustain us. On the sixth day, a double portion of Manna was provided prior to the Sabbath. This second portion would not spoil overnight, reinforcing God's control over even the food’s behavior.

God gave bread not to replace His word, but to reinforce the lesson that we depend on Him for all life - body and soul.

Now Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father thank You for providing for us both physically and spiritually. We are dependent on You for all things, and Your timing is perfect. Please humble us when we rely on our own strength for provision, remind us that You are sovereign.

In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
