1 Samuel 19:1-3 (NIV): “Saul told his son Jonathan and all the attendants to kill David. But Jonathan had taken a great liking to David and warned him, “My father Saul is looking for a chance to kill you. Be on your guard tomorrow morning; go into hiding and stay there. I will go out and stand with my father in the field where you are. I’ll speak to him about you and tell you what I find out.”
Will You Choose Courage and Loyalty When It Costs You Something?
Among David’s continued success and obedience to the Lord, Saul grows increasingly jealous and angry. He feels threatened by David, and reacts to this by calling for David’s death. When you read between the lines, you can interpret that this jealousy and anger is fueled by Saul’s fear and insecurity of his place on the throne, and his relationship with God. Fear and insecurity will strongly affect one’s leadership skills and relationships with loved ones. This juxtaposes Jonathan’s deep friendship and loyalty toward David shown through his reluctance to harm David. Jonathan shows true courage and selflessness in his efforts to protect his friend over his father’s commands.
Now Let’s Pray
Dear Heavenly Father we pray for those struggling with fear and insecurities related to control. By trusting in Your plan, we rebuke the thoughts of anxiety that can be so strong they make us question God’s sovereign authority over our walk on this earth. Please bless us with obedience and a calm mind so we can put our faith in You and bear the fruits of beautiful relationships built on the foundation of Your goodness.
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
